Scleranthus biflorus is a really cool little native plant. It looks like moss but is actually a perennial mounding grass. When you touch it its very spongy, hence the common name cushion grass.
A great little plant for rockeries, native gardens and around ornamental ponds. It looks really cool the way it contours around large rocks. Will spread up to 60cm, although 40cm is more common.
It does best in a sunny position. If it gets too much shade it goes leggy and doesn’t keep the compact, mounding shape. It comes from alpine regions and prefers gritty soil, although we have many in our garden. Our soil is predominantly clay. They have been thriving for many years. You just need to make sure they are kept moist during hot dry summers.
We propagate them via cutting. They are then grown on in 140mm pots at our wholesale nursery in Drouin, West Gippsland. If you would like to buy scleranthus biflorus (Cushion grass) click the button below to check current availability and pricing.
